This restoration work was due to the deterioration of the exterior façade coating and stucco, along with the brownstone details and metal components of the building including the finials on both steeples and the front lower metal roof, which had allowed water infiltration. Durable Restoration undertook this project utilizing all Secretary of Interior Standards for Historic Preservation along with appropriate preservation methods and materials.
Specifically, we scraped and washed the existing façade, recoating it with a vapor permeable mineral coating which allows the masonry to breathe and function as it is meant to while protecting it from weather and the elements. We craned down both finials and replaced them in kind. We repaired and repainted all the wood details, windows and louvers on the front façade and repaired the handicap ramp. This functional facelift will give the building many more years of life than it currently faces today. By using appropriate restoration methods, we ensured that not only does the deterioration halt but also that our methods and materials did not bring any harm to the historic fabric of the building. Durable is honored to have been a part of the ongoing preservation of the iconic Frederick Twin spires.
