Quality craftsmanship and integrity are
crucial to the Durable Restoration process
Proper assessment and diagnosis followed by quality craftsmanship and integrity are crucial to the restoration process. Improper diagnosis along with poor direction of the needed actions often results in more damage to a historical building than doing nothing at all. These improper actions include such frequently performed “repairs” as sandblasting and using hard mortar on old bricks, masonry coatings, roof coatings, etc.
Proper assessment, compatible materials, skill of workmanship, and integrity of the artisans are all equally critical to exterior restoration. Integrity is extremely important as the necessary steps in many of the processes can be very exacting and sometimes slow. One could have the first three – proper assessment, compatible materials, and skill of workmanship – and yet still have a poor quality project if the artisans involved don’t have the utmost dedication and integrity. Unfortunately for building owners, the bad effects that these “repairs” may cause often do not become apparent for years. Integrity is a hallmark of Durable Restoration.
